The White House Wordsmith

Since we seem to be on a theme of young people in government~~here is another one for you!

President-Elect Obama has appointed a 27-year old to be his director of speech writing. Jon Favreau, who will be the youngest person to be selected as chief speechwriter, has helped write almost every speech Barack Obama has given for the past 4 years. He began his writing career in 2004 when he worked for John Kerry. (he was 22...only 4 years older than you)

When writing a speech with Obama, the future president offer ideas and input, then Favreau turns them into a speech. He has said that being Obama's speechwriter is like being the batting coach for a home-run king. He says that when he sits down to write, he just channels Obama-his ideas his sentence, his phrases. "He looks like he's in college and everybody calls him Favs, so you're like, 'This guy can't be for real, right?'" said Ben Rhodes, another Obama speechwriter. "But it doesn't take long to realize that he's totally synced up with Obama. ... He has access to everything and everybody. There's a lot weighing on his shoulders."

Three months ago, Favreau lived in a house with six friends in Chicago, where he rarely shaved, never cooked and sometimes stayed up to play video games until early morning. Now, he has transformed into what one friend called a "Washington political force."

I think it's great that the youth of America are being more active in our country's politics. If he has been referred to as a political force than he must be for real.. especially if he has impressed those in Washington.

This is insane that all these young people are making a mark in this countries politics!! Its kinda cool that he has impressed those in Washington and that they are like a million years older than him and he is prolly a better writer. So this shows that age doesn't matter!

Having the youth working in the political system is great! Some people are judging what the youth can do...how we need to be more innovative. I think that we are being innovative and obviously some are making a difference. If a 27 year old is writing the speeches for the soon to be President, then good for him. Apparently he was the best choice!

i think it is great to have some youth, working in the government, it shows that not all are youth just sit and play video games and let their parents take care of them. maybe this will encourage others to strive more for success

It's interesting that Barack decided to choose such a young person to be his speech writer. He's only four years older than us. That's Crazy!! I could never imagine writing a speech for a president... I wouldn't even know what to write. It shows how ambitious our youth are!!

I don't see anything wrong with him being young. If he is doing a good job, what is the big deal? It also is a great way for the youth to be more involved in the government.
