Youngest Mayors in US

Sam Juhl of Roland, Iowa is among the youngest mayors in the US. He ran for mayor unopposed in 2005 and won-he was a high school senior at the time. He ran again in 2007 and won 57% of the vote.

Michael Sessions of Hillsdale, Michigan also won in 2005 while he was a senior in high school. He, however, did not run unopposed. Sessions defeated incumbent mayor Doug Ingles, age 51, as a WRITE-IN candidate.

Christopher Seeley was also elected mayor in 2005. Seeley was a high school senior when he won the election in Linesville, Pennsylvania. He ran against long-time Linesville Borough Council Member Kevin McGrath.

All three are still serving as mayor. How's that for Government in Action credit???

That is crazy to think we could be mayors at this age! I think we should leave it up to the people who actually know what they're doing! Our country is screwed up enough.

i agree with paige, people who just get out of high school should not being running cities in our country. people who have some experience should be.

I think that its sweet that they are mayors of their towns because usually kids don't want to take the time and do things like this! And I don't think they need experience because this is where they are gaining experience if they want to pursue other political offices! I think younger people have different insight and they might have more creative ideas then the 70 years olds who continue to run for office for years on end. I think that this a is a good thing! And these kids are sweet, I wish I was Mayor!!!

I think that would be great experience for someone. If they were qualified enough to get voted in as mayor, then good for them. I think having a younger person as mayor could help out the community. They would bring in fresh and new ideas, that maybe someone who is older wouldn't think of. And I think a younger person will listen to what everyone has to say, instead of not caring about the youth.

I think that's awesome as long as they know what their doing.

That is awesome. Good for them. I think that if they're passionate enough about politics and serving the people, I'm glad they were able to start young. I guess it just works for some people. It really means a lot if that one kid won as a write-in.

i agree with holmer you need experience to be a mayor....maybe he could start as being on the board

I don't think people that young have enough experience to be mayor. I think a mayor should be an older person who has lived in the community their whole life and know almost everyone who lives there.

i do do not think they should be mayors for cities. i think they should have to get out and get some experience before they get that high up in power.

Wow! That's crazy. That's a young age to get an experience in politics. But good for them!

Wow...they are so young! But they won and that means that not only young people are voting for them. I think that it is a good thing and young people are the next leaders...why not start now?

Write in candidate won! That is sweet! I hope they all do well, and make good decisions. (as anyone hopes for a mayor...) They are super young, but that doesn't mean they don't know anything!

i think we should have an age limit on being mayor (higher than 18) that is just right havin someone that can't even drink running a town.

I wouldn't do that for a government in action. It takes alot of work to be a mayor and i think it's great that these young people are willing to do it.

i think that would be sweet to be a senior in high school and be they mayor go these guys good luck and i hope everything goes well for them

i really dont think that would ever happen here.
people are too stuck in their ways to vote for one of us.
but more power to the guys who had the guts to take that chance and im glad that they won!

That is pretty cool to be a mayor of a town. They are part of the government by providing laws for their town.

Brocat23 said...

all of these young people getting into a power postion should be good because they should be smart enough to listen to the older people and see what the previous laws were and know what the younger people need from them as well

Haha, that seems like too much work. I'd rather help with a mock election. Its a probably a really good experience though.
