A supermarket is defending itself for refusing to a write out 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell's name on his birthday cake.
Deborah Campbell, 25, of nearby Hunterdon County, N.J., said she phoned in her order last week to the Greenwich ShopRite. When she told the bakery department she wanted her son's name spelled out, she was told to talk to a supervisor, who denied the request.
Karen Meleta, a ShopRite spokeswoman, said the store denied similar requests from the Campbells the last two years, including a request for a swastika.
"We reserve the right not to print anything on the cake that we deem to be inappropriate," Meleta said. "We considered this inappropriate."
The Campbells ultimately got their cake decorated at a Wal-Mart in Pennsylvania, Deborah Campbell said Tuesday.Heath Campbell said he named his son after Adolf Hitler because he liked the name and because "no one else in the world would have that name."
The Campbells' two other children are named JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, who turns 2 in a few months, and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell, who will be 1 in April.
Campbell said he was raised not to avoid people of other races but not to mix with them socially or romantically. But he said he would try to raise his children differently.
"Say he grows up and hangs out with black people. That's fine, I don't really care," he said. "That's his choice."
He said about 12 people attended the birthday party on Sunday, including several children of mixed race.
"I think people need to take their heads out of the cloud they've been in and start focusing on the future and not on the past," Heath Campbell said "They need to accept a name. A name's a name. The kid isn't going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did."
What do you think about the store's policy?

I think its dumb that the store didn't put the name on the cake. It's the kids name, they aren't meaning anything by it. And they aren't referring to the actual Adolf Hitler. So this is just a silly policy that they should just not have. It's a persons birth name, and they can't punish the child and deprive him of a birthday cake! What a stupid store, I bet they get no business! Cause they reject everyones names deemed "inappropriate," Well I think they are inappropiate and they should be shunned. But hey it's their fault for losing business....
I think the store was right to do it. That mother is dumb for naming her kid like that. Times are changing and race doesn't really matter anymore. She needs to be shunned and given a reality check! It's like calling the store and telling them to right KKK on a cake.. I doubt they will do it. INAPPROPRIATE!
i think the store has the right to choose who they serve. regardless of their reason.
I understand where the store is coming from but still it is the kids name. The store just chooses to lose business by refusing to make the cake. Poor kid is going to get teased a lot.
I guess if you want a unique name for your kid that no one else will have-that is it.
I think that the store should have put the name on the cake! It probably isn't very nice to name your kid after Hitler though. The ridicule that is to come with it will be hard for the kid. I think that the store does have a right to decline service, but it was really the kids name.
I feel bad for the kid because he has to live the rest of his life with the name of someone who shamed Germany. The parents shouldn't have been so selfish to name their kid something that extraordinary. The mom could've bought the cake without the name on it and wrote it herself. gosh...
Parents shouldn't name their kid that to begin with that terrible dumb way to lose a and name their kid.
I think every store has the right to make their own policies. I think the name is inappropriate and people should think about how their kids will be treated or how their names will affect them.
why would you name your kid that!
its like naming some kid osama bin laden!! no matter what you say like its in the past it doesnt matter people are going to judge the kid and its going to such for him the rest of his life. im betting he changes his name when he gets older.
regards to the store they have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason.
The store probably thought it was a joke, I would have thought the same thing. Why would the parents name him that though? With everything behind that name, it is just screwing up the kids life for years to come.
Grumble grumble grumble...
THey have the right to refuse yes. but it was a kids name if you refuse a kids name you refuse the kid. and that is rude.
Who would name their kid Adolf Hitler? Wow! What dumb parents! But anyways... I think the store has a right to choose what the put on cakes... it is their business. They're not going to put a picture of the president getting assassinated?? What crazy names for her kids.... that lady is dumb! the kids are gonna get teased.
i think the store can do whatever they want
