Dirty Campaigning..now you know the rest of the story.....

Negative campaigning in America was begun by two lifelong friends, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Back in 1776, they had nothing but love and respect for one another as they worked to claim America's independence. But by 1800, politics had so distanced the pair that, for the first and last time in U.S. history, a president found himself running against his vice president.
Despite their bruising campaign, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams became friends again.

Things got ugly fast. Jefferson's camp accused President Adams of having a "hideous hermaphroditical character, which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman."

In return, Adams' men called Vice President Jefferson "a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father."

As the slurs piled on, Adams was labeled a fool, a hypocrite, a criminal, and a tyrant, while Jefferson was branded a weakling, an atheist, a libertine, and a coward.


Back then, presidential candidates didn't actively campaign. In fact, Adams and Jefferson spent much of the election season at their respective homes in Massachusetts and Virginia.

The key difference between the two politicians was that Jefferson hired a hatchet man named James Callendar to do his smearing for him. Adams, on the other hand, considered himself above such tactics. To Jefferson's credit, Callendar proved incredibly effective, convincing many Americans that Adams desperately wanted to attack France. Although the claim was completely untrue, voters bought it, and Jefferson stole the election.

Jefferson paid a price for his dirty campaign tactics, though. Callendar served jail time for the slander he wrote about Adams, and when he emerged from prison in 1801, he felt Jefferson still owed him.

After Jefferson did little to appease him, Callendar broke a story in 1802 that had only been a rumor until then -- that the President was having an affair with one of his slaves, Sally Hemings. In a series of articles, Callendar claimed that Jefferson had lived with Hemings in France and that she had given birth to five of his children.

The story plagued Jefferson for the rest of his career. And although generations of historians shrugged off the story as part of Callendar's propaganda, DNA testing in 1998 showed a link between Hemings' descendants and the Jefferson family.

Just as truth persists, however, so does friendship. Twelve years after the vicious election of 1800, Adams and Jefferson began writing letters to each other and became friends again. They remained pen pals for the rest of their lives and passed away on the same day, July 4, 1826.
It was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

While this is not a Paul Harvey story, it sure sounds like it could be. Thoughts?

wow! i think that was low of Jefferson to hire a "hatchet man". It's good that they became friends again. What a jerk of Jefferson to have an affair. I wonder how things would have turned out if Adams won, or if neither of them had a dirty campaign?

That's crazy that they fought so much after being such good friends for so long neither of them deserved to be president in my opinion they both were childish and stupid. At least they became friends later on.

I think its silly that the presidents were fighting and talking bad about each other when they were bff's! But that's how it is in today's election they slam their opponents all the time, even though its not even true half the time. Although today's presidents aren't bff's like Jefferson and Adams! But at least they were friends again after all of that!! :D

i also agree with ramrod y would good friends have to do thing in which they both knew was wrong and did it anyways all they did was ruin they're friendship

Yeah i think it was pretty low of them both to be talking bad about each other like that. But its exactly like in today's politics, because all they do is talk bad about each other and that isnt really what we wanna hear about! so i think that this is just something that was just taken to an extreme along time ago!

Presidents slam each other all the time on topics in the election campaigning these days. Jefferson must have really wanted to win if he hired a "hatchet man" to do his dirty work against his good friend. It's a good thing after the election was over that they became friends again.

Wow...I cant believe they did dirty campaining. Fighting over dumb things is soo childish. I think they deserved to be put in jail, but they finally forgave eachother and became BFFs again!

It was low for each of them to talk bad about each other since they where friends and all. But it was good for them to put the election aside after it was over and became friends, I thought was pretty cool of them.

politics is a dirty game.
most of the time you dont really find out the guys opinion but really all you find out is all the bad things about the other guy.
its hard to pick a president of our country out of that...

i think they should focus on the real issues and stop hating on each other...

I had no idea that they used slander back then. Its actually kinda funny. Jefferson did what we had to do so yay him.

I didn't think they would have been that low back then. For Jefferson to hire Callendar just shows how weak he is. All the rumors too.

It's crazy how politics and competition can ruin friendships. Its sad that these two friends could treat each other so badly and say such awful things. Its good they finally rekindled their relationship.

Dirty campaigning is wrong, and its stupid, why not just say what you will end up doing for the country in stead of basing each other, get up and do something for crying out loud, its dumb and should be done properly or they don't deserve my vote.
