New Penny

Starting on Feb. 12, 2009 the tails side of the penny will get a new image. The coins will be commemorating the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. The new coins will debut in three-month intervals. In 2010, the penny will get a new tails side image that has yet to be selected.
The penny has not been redesigned in 50 years.

Penny facts:
  • The profile of Lincoln that debuted on the "obverse" side of the penny in 1909 was the first image of a president to appear on a circulated U.S. coin.

  • Unlike other presidential profiles on coins, he's facing right.

  • The Lincoln Memorial first appeared on the reverse side in 1959 in honor of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

  • "In God We Trust" appears on the heads side of the penny. The phrase became a standard feature on U.S. money in 1963.

Some think we should just stop making the penny because it can cost more than a cent to make one because of copper prices. Some lawmakers in Congress have pushed that the penny be phased out.
What do you think?

I think we should still have them cause they're used a lot. If we didn't have them then we would have to pay by nickels and go by 5's.

I think that we should keep the penny, even though most people see them as worthless. If we tried to take them all out it would be a big hassle and to start going by .05 for everything would be different. Prices would probably go up for somethings.

I don't know. We have so many currency notes. There is so much unused change out there. I don't think people appreciate the value of money. It'd be too hard to discontinue penny production and use. Maybe some day it will change.

We need to keep the penny the penny is sweet, and used a lot. I'm sure somewhere along our economy the penny will be worth something hopefully, but i feel we need the penny.

No make the fircken penny, other wise change would really suck when your counting, Prices are always going up. but if you put making it on hold then yea that would be ok because there are plenty of pennies, i find some every where in my room and on the ground, so if its stopped for a bit i'm sure we wont panic.

and or just make the penny out of somehthing other than copper.

I think they should leave the penny alone! And just let us use it. Sometimes its all the money we have and then if they discontinue the use of it what are we going to do with all the extra penny's?! Also, everything would go up in price and it would be a lot harder to figure out things. I think they should just relax and let us keep the penny! It might cost more than a cent to make the penny, but why shun it out...that's just plain mean!

i think we should keep the penny. People are used to them. If we took it out prices would have to change and go up because the nickle is the next.

The Penney shouldn't be taken out of the system. Paying for stuff everything would have to be even same with receiving change.

i think we need to keep the penny and leave it alone, we need it because without it, counting change would really suck, and leave it alone because if its changed it will be to confusing to work with

If we didn't have pennys it would be harder to make change and pay in exact amounts, one side of the deal is going to some out short. This would probably make prices of certain things go up.

taking the penny out is like taking away the pledge of allegiance. it just wouldnt be the same anymore with out it. if you then buy some thing for a penny and you have to pay by five cents then you are just gettin the shaft of the whole deal.

stop making penny's is stupid why would they stop penny's for. because they are old. If that happens then nickle are next in line to be discontinued.

I agree that the penny should be left in circulation, because if it was taken out how would you pay for 6 cents, with out pennies we would have to count by five.

Just use less copper. I don't think anyone cares if one penny is actually worth one penny. The penny should stay in circulation though, its a an American tradition. Ha.

if it costs more to make a penny than it actually is worth then thats silly.
maybe we should find some cheaper material to make the penny out of...
but i think we should keep it!

I agree with bro. Penny's are sweet. =) They're not truly used all of the time. You see them all over on the streets. But I think we should still keep them in circulation. It would be a pain to get exact amount without it. Prices for other things will probably go up. Plus the penny has been with us since forever. It's tradition... we just don't break that. =)

I think keeping the penny is a good thing. If we loss the penny then the history of the penny will be gone. Lincoln was one of the most important people of all time and I think we need to have the penny to remember him. Having a new penny would be something new to look forward to.

I think that they should still make the penny even know of the copier is high. But we should get a new back for the penny.
